Scientific American internships for Spring 2012 in New York

.Scientific American is currently accepting applications for its spring editorial internships based in New York. The interns will be involved in the editorial process and will conduct research and fact checking as assigned. Primary duties may also include writing news stories and blog posts.
Requirements:

• Have completed one year in a graduate program in journalism or have equivalent work experience in journalism.

• Strong understanding of science news and current issues in science, technology and health is required.

La Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) ha reconocido la excelencia de otras 46 publicaciones especializadas de nuestro país, en la II Evaluación de la calidad de revistas científicas españolas.  En el examen anterior fueron 33 las que consiguieron este reconocimiento, que pretende favorecer la visibilidad y posicionamiento de la producción científica y de la innovación española a nivel internacional.

Hoy nace la Revista de Comunicación y Salud

Hoy, lunes 17 de enero, ha tenido lugar el lanzamiento oficial de la Revista de Comunicación y Salud (RCyS), una publicación científica en castellano y portugués revisada por pares, que se difunde electrónicamente en formato de libre acceso con una periodicidad semestral. RCyS nace con la intención de construir un lugar de encuentro y de referencia para los expertos y académicos de los países iberoamericanos, en el que poder publicar y consultar los avances científicos que se desarrollan en el emergente campo de la comunicación y la salud.

Percepción social de la ciencia según Nature y Scientific American

Las revistas Nature y Scientific American unieron esfuerzos hace poco para conocer los niveles de confianza social por la ciencia. Los resultados de la encuest, respondida por unos 21.000 lectores habituales de las revistas, se publicaron la semana pasada.

Los autores de la encuesta reconocen que quienes las respondieron tenían conocimientos e interés por los temas científicos y tecnológicos -un 19% de los encuestados poseían el título de doctor, por ejemplo-. No obstante, las dos subrayan las discrepancias en cuanto al tipo de respuestas en distintos países o regiones del planeta, lo que ha llevado a Nature a titular el artículo donde resume las conclusiones “Science and society: A Pacific divide”.

Peer review is not perfect

.

Often the exalted scientific and medical journals sitting atop the impact factor pyramid are considered the only publications that offer legitimate breakthroughs in basic and clinical research. But some of the most important findings have been published in considerably less prestigious titles. Take the paper describing BLAST—the software that revolutionized bioinformatics by making it easier to search for homologous sequences. This manuscript has, not surprisingly, accumulated nearly 30,000 citations since it was published in 1990. What may be surprising, however, was the fact that this paper was published in a journal with a current impact factor of 3.9.
