Employment and social inclusion for young people in EU

.Today young people all over Europe are key priority to the EU Commission who calls for employment and social inclusion to be top priority.

Youth unemployment in the EU among 15-24-year-old has increased by 50% since the onset of the crisis, from an average of 15% in February 2008 to 22,5% in July this year.

Educational gap across and within the EU

.Despite commitments by EU Member States to promote equity in education and training, major geographic disparities persist in educational opportunities and outcomes, not only across but also within the EU, according to an independent report, Mind the Gap. Educational inequality across EU regions, authored by Nesse, a network of experts in social sciences of education, for the European Commission.

Maleta de la comunicació: recursos pedagògics i estratègies sobre comunicació

.La Societat Catalana d’Educació Ambiental (SCEA) ha elaborat sota el nom de Maleta de la comunicació un recull d’estratègies i recursos pedagògics sobre comunicació que inclou materials per educar en valors crítics cap als mitjans i processos de comunicació i materials per desenvolupar les habilitats comunicatives de l’alumnat.

La Maleta de la comunicació serà presentada avui 8 de maig a les 18:00 hores a la seu de l’Agenda 21 Escolar de Barcelona. La presentació anirà a càrrec Bet Vallcorba, responsable del projecte, i de membres d’Agenda 21 Escolar de Barcelona i la Societat Catalana

RECORDATORI: Debat: És possible dissenyar un sistema educatiu basat en la ciència?

.El primer acte del Cicle Calaix de Ciència de l’any 2012, organitzat per l’Observatori de la Comunicació Científica (OCC-UPF) i l’Associació Catalana de Comunicació Científica (ACCC) es pregunta si és possible dissenyar un sistema educatiu basat en la ciència.

Al debat, moderdat per Cristina Ribas, presidenta de l’ACCC i professora de la UPF, hi participaran Gemma Altell (psicòloga, Fundació Salut i Comunitat), Jordi Jubany (mestre, antropòleg i autor del blog Eclipsi), Anna López Sala (neuropsicòloga, Unitat Trastorns de l’Aprenentatge – Servei de Neurologia de Sant Joan de Déu) i Anna Sans Fitó (neuròloga infantil, Unitat Trastorns de l’Aprenentatge – Servei de Neurologia de Sant Joan de Déu).

V Premio UBA a la divulgación científica, educativa y cultural

La Universidad de Buenos Aires ha convocado la V edición del «Premio UBA a la divulgación de contenidos educativos en medios periodísticos nacionales», un galardón que pretende «reconocer a las producciones periodísticas de divulgación científica, educativa y cultural».

El plazo de presentación de candidaturas termina el jueves 8 de septiembre.

New science centre in Warsaw

In 5 November, the Copernicus Science Centre, in Warsaw, is opening doors. It is one of the first institutions of its type in Poland that will include hundreds of interactive exhibits where children, young people and adults can carry out experiments showing how the world around us works. The priority is on understanding the essence of phenomena, rather than on telling the story of scientific progress.

The Scopes monkey trial, 85 years later

The man in the picture is John Thomas Scopes. He was a teacher in Dayton (Tennessee, USA) who in 1925 was brought to court for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. At that time, teaching evolution in Tennessee meant a violation of the Butler Act, a law prohibiting it in that State. The charge led to the trial formally known as The State of Tennessee vs. Scopes (popularly, the Scopes monkey trial), a milestone in the struggle of creationism followers to recognize their “religion” as a scientific truth. It attracted the media attention (read, for example, a chronicle of 1925) and inspired the play Inherit the wind (read the review of its release), and various film and television versions. In fact, 85 years later, the trial is still a current issue and some media talk about it.

El portal de divulgació científica Recerca en Acció en col·laboració amb la Fundació Alícia acaben de publicar un estudi sobre els hàbits alimentaris dels infants i joves que pot ser del vostre interès. Durant un mes i mig tractaran aquesta temàtica al web i penjaran noves informacions i conclusions al respecte. Recerca en Acció és una iniciativa impulsada per la fundació Talència, que té com a objectiu donar a conèixer la investigació que es fa a Catalunya en totes les disciplines de manera amena, gràfica i participativa.

Science and Engineering Indicators (SEI), published by the National Science Board, provides a broad base of quantitative information on the United States of America and international science and engineering enterprise.

Indicators are quantitative representations that might reasonably be thought to provide summary information bearing on the scope, quality, and vitality of the science and engineering enterprise. The indicators reported in SEI are intended to contribute to an understanding of the current environment and to inform the development of future policies. SEI is used by readers who hold a variety of views about which indicators are most significant.
